At the station, after verifying her identity, Daniela spokeโ€”with tired but firm eyes:

โ€œPleaseโ€ฆ let me tell the truth. But I beg youโ€”especially you, mother-in-lawโ€”to listen to me before you judge.โ€

Everyone nodded. The room fell silent.

She began with a name: Luis.

โ€œLuis isโ€ฆ my younger brother. But we have never been publicly acknowledged as siblings.โ€

I froze.

Daniela explained: her mother had worked as a domestic worker for a wealthy family in San Luis Potosรญ. When Daniela was four, her mother had a relationship with her employerโ€”and thatโ€™s how Luis was born. When the relationship was discovered, she was fired. They returned to a distant town, with nothing. Luis grew up without a father, without legal papers, and with little education.

โ€œNow he fixes refrigerators and air conditioners. But he got into debt with loan sharks. They threatened him. He fled to Mexico City with nowhere to go. I was the only thing he had left.โ€

A week after they were married, Luis called her desperately.

โ€œI couldnโ€™t rent. I couldnโ€™t sleep on the street. He begged me to let him stay for a few days.โ€
